\r\n When choosing a dining table size, there are two main points to consider: the size of your room and the number of diners you'd like to accommodate. It's best to first look at the size of your room to determine the largest table you can fit. Then, you can always size down. It's good to use the shape of your room as a rule of thumb for choosing your table shape. (For instance, a rectangular or oval table in a rectangular space.) Then, use our guidelines below to help you choose a table that is comfortable for both the room and your lifestyle. If you plan to frequently host large parties, you'll probably opt for the largest table option for your room. On the other hand, if you prefer more intimate gatherings and smaller family dinners, a smaller table may be a better fit.\r\n

    \r\n Measure the Room\r\n

    \r\n

\r\n Before buying a table, shoppers should make sure that the table will fit in the dining room. This requires a bit of thought and planning. The table should be small enough that it leaves space on all sides for people to draw out their seats. However, the amount of space required varies according to how the table will be used.\r\n

    \r\n

    \r\n Dining Table Width\r\n

    \r\n

\r\n The table width should be at least 91 cm, which is wide enough to accommodate place settings and any dishes and centrepieces in the middle of the table. However, table widths can be up to 112 cm.\r\n

    \r\n

    \r\n Factor in Buffer Space\r\n

    \r\n

\r\n The dining table should have an equal buffer of space on all sides, if possible, otherwise it would have to be moved to seat people. A gap of 81 cm is comfortable for allowing people to sit and stand up. If people will be moving behind the chairs, a gap of 97 cm is suitable. If there are plans to serve guests from behind their chairs, then plan for a buffer of 107 cm. When measuring for the dining table remember to account for any display cabinets or other furniture, and measure from there rather than the wall.\r\n

    \r\n

\r\n Also measure the door width to make sure that all the pieces of the table will fit through it. To help to visualise how a table will fit into the room, it may be useful to take a sheet or a table cloth that matches the size of the table and place it on the floor in the position that it would take in the room. This may make measuring easier too.\r\n

    \r\n

    \r\n Select a Dining Table Shape\r\n

    \r\n

    \r\n
    \r\n

    \r\n

\r\n The right shape for a dining room table is largely influenced by the size of the room. However, the shape of the table can also affect the aesthetics of the room over all. In general, round and oval tables work well for small spaces because they have no corners, which take up space that cannot be used. A round table often makes it easier for guests to slide chairs in and out, but the table may need more space for place settings since it tapers inward. Square and rectangular tables work best in larger spaces. They help to fill the room and can easily accommodate more seating.\r\n

    \r\n

\r\n To fully style a room, it is a good idea to match the proportions of the room to the table, so choose a square table for a square room and a rectangular table for a rectangular room. However, an octagonal or oval table adds flare to an otherwise dull rectangular room, while a square table adds a contemporary feel. In addition, the square and circular shapes help contribute to free flowing conversation, since people can see each other easily. These tables also convert to rectangular and oval shapes if they have leaves that can be inserted.\r\n

    \r\n

    \r\n Table Height\r\n

    \r\n
\r\nMost dining tables are about 30 inches high. Chair height is generally 18 inches (from the floor to the seat). This allows for comfortable lap and leg room. A general rule of thumb is to allow 12 inches between the seat of your chair and your tabletop. \r\n
